Suggestions for Mitering Aluminum Crown Moulding
Recommended Tools
Lay out the two pieces of aluminum to be mitered.
(Decide which will be the top piece and which will be the bottom).
With pre-creased miter templates face up, place
them over the appropriate pieces of aluminum.
Step 1:
Holding the miter template firmly in place with one hand, using a
pencil, trace along the edge of the template with the other hand.
Repeat this process for both pieces of aluminum.
Step 2:
Remove the template from the aluminum trims.
Step 3:
Rough cut the molding shape 1.5" on the outside of the traced
line on both pieces.
Step 3a:
Trim .75" away from the trace line with aviation snips on both
pieces.
Step4:
Again using aviation snips, cut from the .75" cut line straight
into the traced line. (Make sure not to cut beyond the traced lines).
Flap cut the flat areas and flange cut the curved area approximately
1/8" apart, making sure the flanges curve under. Using a hammer,
tap the flanges under to approximately 90 degrees or an "L"
shape.
Step 5:
Using hand brakes, bend the flap cut under to 90 degrees or an "L"
shape.
Step 5a:
Take the top mitered piece and trim a clean even cut on the traced
line.
Step 6:
Assemble both miter pieces to complete the project. The mitered
piece is now ready for installation. A preferred nailing method
is to nail under the cove to take advantage of the shadow line.
Note: Miters may be cut using a compound saw
following the same finishing steps as above.
